Money in Big Data for Fitness Apps

A lot of people would be familiar with the fitness apps that are currently available for mobiles and tablets. The apps currently available generate massive amounts of data in such short periods of time.

While fitness apps generate this data look, the vast majority of developers look at it like a lifeline to their business. More fitness apps are using their data as an opportunity to share this information with potential brand advertisers for commercial gain.

People unfamiliar with big data or certain marketing analytics do not realise how much information we share with fitness apps. Not only do the apps know your basic information I.e., name, age, gender. It also knows you workout routine, daily steps, heart rate, sleep pattern and your daily eating habbits. Take MyFitnessPal for example who has amassed one of the world's largest databases of what people eat.

MyFitnessPal share Personal Data with advertisers to provide their users with information on the products and services that they think are most relevant to them. This enables MyFitness Pal to improve their Adverising and promotional marketing.

As fitness apps continue to grow and improve, overtime so will more of their data. This will give advertisers even more of an insight into their audience and overall generate money for the fitness app.

  1. Hi Robert,

Thanks for this clear and concise article on the money in big data for fitness apps. As a consumer, myself and i'm sure many others, never consider how our data is being sold and profited on. We as consumers only think about the latest products and services that we can avail of for "free". However, now i realise that the saying that nothing in life comes free is true, as although consumers may think we are getting a bargain, the big players in the industry are generating huge profits from sharing and selling our personal information. It is a scary thought!

  2. Hi,
Great blog post. I found this post to be very interesting & provided a huge amount of new information on digital marketing that I have not seen in other posts.
Can you recommend any other sites or blogs which offers further information? Particularly on how digital marketing can benefit the wellness industry. What are the main challenges do you think that I will identify as I begin to incorporate these elements into my Business? Is there a financial impact as this is something I will need to know before incorporating theses aspects into my business.
    Thanks
